The owner of a top restaurant who received a scathing review fired back with a sarcastic comment suggesting that the customer must have “obviously become a food and restaurant critic” in his own right.
The Sparrowhawk in Fence, Lancashire is ranked # 2 out of four restaurants in the village and rated 4.5 stars overall after 738 previous guest reviews.
It also enjoys a Travelers’ Choice award and is Taste Lancashire – Highest Quality Assured and Member of Made in Lancashire.
Although many of his 452 five-star reviews praise the food and location of the restaurant, one user broke ranks by describing his experience at the Sparrowhawk as ‘totally disappointing’, LancsLive Reports.
The user, named Guitarproctor, awarded the restaurant two stars after visiting a group of 13 people where they had reserved a table and allegedly “pre-ordered food.”
They wrote: “The ‘salmon crusted’ starter was a weird version of the dish that was basically smoked salmon on toast with a few poached eggs.
âSeveral had the Sunday roast and agreed it was disappointing because of the chewy beef, soggy and heavy Yorkshire and barely any gravy. Those with the chicken option found it dry. “
The user went on to say that the “vegan option” of Mediterranean tofu tacos, roasted tomatoes and house salad “features uncooked tofu straight out of the package with reheated old ratatouille poured over the top.” .
They added, “I can only assume it was the chefs day off. The waiters were friendly enough, but I definitely won’t be coming back.”
The owner of The Sparrowhawk, whose username on TripAdvisor is LancashireFlatcap, responded: âWell Guitarproctor, thanks for taking the time to post your review following your recent visit.
“Like so many others today who have watched the plethora of food shows on television, you have clearly become a food critic in your own right.”
They added that “it always amazes them” and “others” within the industry when customers are asked about meals, service and drinks on the day that “face to face reaction is satisfaction reaction. and pleasure “.
They added, âUnfortunately, the follow-up review sometimes takes the opposite view. This is all very contradictory, especially when a tip has been left.
âAs you will have demonstrated yesterday was a very busy day and yours is the only negative reaction. I think that speaks for itself.
âAs you will not be returning, I wish you good luck in finding other places that meet your high expectations for a ‘five’ or ‘tenner’ as mentioned in your other reviews.
âPS our boss was not on leave. He and others had been in the kitchen since 8am, making all of our food for the day from fresh ingredients, which is why you never have to assume anything.
Other previous restaurant patrons have praised the old farmhouse for its “excellent” food, and many are sure they will “come back”.
One user, by the username Hellas_Fans, rated the restaurant five stars in August and said he “can’t wait to go back.”
They wrote, “A friend and I went for lunch. The food was amazing. My friend had the scampi and I had the duck which was cooked to perfection.
âIt’s the little things that made the difference. The salad served with the langoustines and vegetables was fresh and out of the ordinary. Finally we had the berry trifle which was light and delicious.
âThe service was perfect. Lawrence and William couldn’t do enough for us.
âI have lived in the village for 17 years and this was one of the best meals I have had at Sparrow. Thank you everyone.”
