NEW ORLEANS – The city of New Orleans hopes to collect surveys from 1,000 people who attend or participate in the Krewe of Boo parade to determine whether parades like this are contributing to the spread of COVID.
40 New Orleans Department of Health staff and volunteers, disguised as Dr.Anthony Fauci, will be holding placards with QR codes that link to the anonymous questionnaire. The Faucis will be handing out gift bags to those participating in the study filled with fun items and a free Ellume COVID-19 home test. Those who participate will receive several surveys over the next few weeks after the parade to determine if they are sick or have been tested for COVID.
City officials say that since the city of New Orleans enacted the mask and vaccine warrants in August, vaccinations have increased by more than 11% and the average number of daily cases has fallen by 90%. . They hope the information gathered from the study will help them make an informed decision regarding Carnival 2022.
“I expect that we can show that everything is working and protect our community as it should,” said city health director Dr Jennifer Avegno.
The Krewe of Boo will be the first parade to roll in New Orleans since Mardi Gras 2020, over a year and a half ago. It will be held on Saturday and will take place in the Marigny, the French Quarter, along Canal Street and in the warehouse district. The parade will have more than 400 horsemen in 13 chariots and more than 30 marching units, including the Clydesdales.
With dense crowds expected, everyone is encouraged to wear masks during the parade.
“We really strongly encourage our crowds, when you’re in the thick of the action, wear these masks,” Avegno said.
Krewe captain Brian Kern is confident the large crowds he expects will not contribute to the spread of COVID.
“I think everything will be fine,” he said.
“This is how we save Carnival 2022, all together, by participating,” Avegno said.
