Thane Guardian Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday inspected locations at four locations in the district where parking lots for heavy goods vehicles could be created to reduce congestion. Instructions have been issued to start and complete the work as soon as possible.
The city has seen heavy traffic jams in recent days, with the Ghodbunder road being the most affected. The traffic jams are mainly caused by heavy goods vehicles entering Thane from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust and Gujarat on their way to Mumbai.
âWe have created a coordination team made up of district officials from Thane, Raigad and Palghar to tackle the problem. Parking lots are created so that heavy goods vehicles can park there during peak hours and be released in stages, âsaid Shinde.
He added that possible locations had been investigated in Uran, Kharegaon, Dapodi and Bhiwandi.
âWe surveyed a 50 hectare plot at JNPT, a 100 hectare plot at the Razdan junction and several smaller plots as well. Work on these plots will be carried out on a war footing, âsaid Shinde.
