The BMA wants NHS organizations to be mandated to conduct exit interviews with doctors who have resigned.
A motion passed unanimously at the Annual Representatives Meeting (ARM) today said all UK governments ‘must require all NHS employers to conduct exit interviews using of an evidence-based tool”.
These should be anonymized and published on an open-access database, and will help identify the factors that drive doctors to leave the profession, the motion added.
The exit interviews would use an adaptation of the DEStress tool, originally designed for junior doctors.
New national NHS platforms should also be created, allowing employees to share their views on management and workplace culture.
proposing movementBMA South Central Regional Council Chairman Mr Ian McNab said the NHS ‘burnout tsunami’ needs to be dealt with ‘urgently’.
Dr Georgina Budd spoke in favor of the motion and said ‘the current situation is not just disappointing patients, it is disappointing us’.
She added: “Burnout has intrinsic links to our abilities to care and to empathize not only with our patients, but with each other.”
BMA Board Chairman Dr Chaand Nagpaul said: “Burnout is not just a problem for the individual. This jeopardizes patient safety.
A GMC survey last year warned that GPs are most likely to be at high risk of burnout compared to other doctors, with around a third (32%) of GPs operating at this level.
Another GMC survey of doctors leaving the profession found that more than four in ten GPs who left the NHS did so because of burnout.
A recent Pulse survey found that half of the current GP workforce plans to retire at or before age 60.

Motion from the CENTRAL SOUTH REGIONAL COUNCIL: that this meeting is extremely concerned about the unacceptable levels of physician burnout in the GMC and BMA surveys and demands that UK governments require all NHS employers:-
i) conduct exit interviews using an evidence-based tool that has been specifically designed to identify stressors in young physicians and can help identify quitting factors (e.g., the instrument DEStress) – PASSED
ii) take immediate action to mitigate the stressors that lead to physician burnout and resignations – PASSED
iii) publish anonymized exit interview results via a national open-access database, to enable analysis of burnout and quit factors, and to allow job applicants to compare employment conditions at different NHS employers – PAST
iv) creating and subscribing to new national NHS platforms that share employees’ views on the management and culture of their employers (similar to Glassdoor’s UK ‘Best Places to Work’ webpage), to further incentivize employers to respond to concerns – PAST
