Customer reviews of the official set of the World Chess Academy

Below we feature a review from World Chess Shop customer Piotr Zbierajewski of the World Chess Academy Official Ensemble.

Hi,

I would like to present to you my little review of the official World Chess chess set that I recently bought for outdoor games.

1. Unpacking.

The box was therefore delivered by the carrier in fairly good condition.

The box is made of good quality cardboard. Personally, I don’t like the garish label with “Legalize Your Skills” with the information on FIDE Arena, especially when this is misleading due to the fact that FIDE Arena ratings are not the same as normal FIDE ratings. (and this is a chess game, not digital)

The box is opened by pulling one side up. It uses magnets strong enough to keep everything inside in place. Although I probably wouldn’t take the risk in a ‘let’s really shake this thing – test’.

I was really scared of the cardboard chessboard but in fact it is made from very good quality cardboard, much better than the really cheap ones on the market. But still, it’s cardboard, so you don’t have to put it to the test.

Personally, I love the colors and that specific gray color that they used around the squares. In addition, the scoring is very subtle. Fairly visible for new players and discreet enough for experienced players, to the point that you really forget that he is there. I think this should be a standard style for all current boards that use notation.

The chess pieces are packed in a large zipped plastic bag, which contains two other smaller bags with white and black pieces.

Unfortunately, the thin cardboard inside the box is very fragile, and as you can see the chess pieces have already had some scratches and bumps during transport, visible in the box.

2. The game of chess.

Now let’s talk about the whole game of chess.

As a regular player, playing on the wooden chess board with wooden chess pieces (Timeless German Knight 3.75 “), I was very skeptical about this chess game. I mean, this are plastic chess pieces, right? How much you can expect from this kind of chess game. After all, I just wanted to be able to play outside and not worry too much about the weather or the weather. the environment.

And I am surprised. It is the most comfortable plastic chess game I have ever played.

The pieces are really well weighted (not that far from the wooden ones – comparison in a second). Very comfortable to hold. I mean ergonomically, they’re really great. Incredible in fact.

Just to be clear – I’ve never played official world chess pieces before. However, since this is a plastic copy of the original wooden OWCP, those who already own or have played with the wooden set will likely recognize the same playability with plastic figures. For me, these plastic parts also made me think of buying wooden ones (but currently they are not available…).

But let’s talk about the details.

The chessboard is therefore 435 mm x 435 mm with a single 48 mm square. The height of the king is 86 mm. The information, which is not given in the official product description, is that the king has a base diameter of 37mm. Thus, the ratio of king squared is 77%, which is a good point for most recommended ratios, both for a tournament and for casual games.

Underneath the chess pieces you will find a thin layer of paper-like coating. In fact, it does its job pretty well, but it would probably peel off easily when playing outside in the pouring rain.

Now let’s compare these World Chess Official Academy chess pieces to the 3.75 ”Timeless German Knight set I have. I was surprised to see that in fact almost all of the pieces in this plastic set match, in height, the wooden set.

The difference, however, is in the width. The wooden set, next to the king (and slightly the queen), is 5-10% smaller in diameter. Another difference is the weight, which should come as no surprise, although from a plastic chess set one would expect a bigger difference – again World Chess Official Academy Chess vs. wooden Timeless German Knight 3.75 “.

Room Plastic Drink
Pawn 12g 17g
Tower 20g 24g
Knight 25g 27g
Bishop 20g 28g
Queen 26g 46g
King 28g 57g

As you can see, only the queen and the king have a significant difference of almost half the weight, while the other coins have between 8% and 30%.

3. Final conclusion.

In my opinion, World Chess Official Academy Chess has unnecessary information on the box saying, “Starter chess set”. Why? This set is so comfortable to play with that many seasoned and very experienced players could really use it in many cases, instead of the wooden sets. I think this label unnecessarily scares many advanced chess players just because of those words.

The chess pieces are very ergonomic and well weighted, considering that it is a plastic game. I think this could be one of the best plastic sets on the market right now.

As for the negatives, I think there is always room for improvement when it comes to the chessboard (there are better cardboard and plastic options on the market if you really want to research them) . I’d love to see World Chess experiment more with vinyl chess boards (I’d love to see one with the graphic design taken from this cardboard chess board from the set). Another improvement would be to change the lower skid shoes. I don’t think it has to be a felt pillow, but still, something that maybe could handle slightly rainy weather as well. Finally, the chess set could be even slightly heavier to really mimic the feeling of moving the wooden chess pieces. But the last sentence should be taken with care as chess sets always have extra weight artificially added, so one will find the lighter configuration more comfortable and others will be satisfied with the heavier chess pieces.

In conclusion, this is a really good set with a chess board and cardboard box, as well as those iconic (but plastic) pieces from World Chess.

In my opinion, the purchase was absolutely worth that $ 32.00, if you want to buy a really well made plastic set. If you’re playing with a wooden set that isn’t the best in the world, you might find yourself switching to this one instead, possibly due to the ergonomics and design of the toilet parts.

However, when it comes to chess clubs, I think the World Chess offer for clubs is much more interesting because you can (or could – currently not available) buy, as a club, 10 sets of those. here for $ 150.00, so for $ 15 per set. Considering the quality of the World Chess Official Academy Chess account, I think this is a good deal.
