Against the Grain (ATG) Interviews Alicia Wise, Executive Director of CLOCKSS

In a new ATG interview, Tom Gilson and Katina Strauch chat with Alicia Wise, Executive Director of CLOCKS.

From Interview:

ATG: When you accepted the position, you remarked that CLOCKSS was “an extremely important service”. For those who don’t know CLOCKSS and its mission, can you tell us why it’s so important? What essential services does CLOCKSS offer to players in the world of scholarly communications? Is there anything unique about these services?

AW: The mission of the CLOCKSS Archives is to ensure that scientific records remain available to humanity. Academics have worked so hard to advance knowledge, and their hard work is important to all of us and especially to academics who will build on this foundation in the future. Digital preservation is too big a job for just one organization, and even if it were possible, it’s too big a job to be given to just one organization, and therefore CLOCKSS’ community approach with, and more broadly, LOCKSS is inspiring.

At CLOCKSS, we focus on electronic publications. Initially that meant books and journals, but now it means books, journals and more. We preserve all the rich resources that underpin articles and books (think data, protocols, software, visualizations), as well as entirely new forms of research (think interactive scholar-led human resources published by academics or libraries).
